‘Hanging Around’ Card Making Tutorial

In honour of hammock day, we have designed a unique card celebrating just taking it easy! With a hand stitched hammock strung between two trees made with clear rubber stamps and a colorful inked sunset, this card communicates relaxation.

To make this card you will need:

To Make This Card:

Using the Winter Trees Clear Stamps stamp two trees with the branches leaning inward (to support the hammock)

Fill in foliage with the clear stamp featuring 3 round circles. Stamp each image twice before reinking to fill the tree in with light and shadow. Do this with both colors of green pigment ink.

With the sponge dauger and a piece of paper, place the paper across the horizon (near or above the base of the trees) and sponge in green ink from the edge of the paper towards the bottom of the design. Clean the dauber well.

Using a clean dauber, begin with yellow ink and begin inking in the horizon. Make a small semi circle between the trees and allow it to grow with each additional color. After yellow fill in the rest of the sky in the following order: amber, orange, pink, violet, blue. Ink the edges of the design with the blue ink.

To make the hammock draw two U-shapes from the branches of each tree. Add detail as suggested in the photo.

To complete the hammock, use the needle and the craft foam by placing your design on the craft foam, then punching tiny holes along the lines you just drew – spacing them evenly about 1/4″ apart. Be sure you do not punch the holes too close as this will tear as you sew in the details of your hammock.

Thread one strand of dark green embroidery floss in a small needle. Begin by bringing the thread up from the back of the design. Leave a tail on the back about 1-2″ long. Turn the design upside down and secure the tail with a piece of scotch tape (be sure not to cover any of the holes you punched). Sew in a lattice type fashion the hammock details. You can get an idea of how to do this from the photo. After completing the hammock, cut the end of the embroidery floss to about 1-2″ in length and secure with tape to the back of your design.

Stamp the ‘carefree’ sentiment in the sky part of the design and the ‘time for recess’ sentiment (both from the Live Well Clear Stamp Set) on the card face to complete the card.
