‘Jewelled Wings’ Card Making Tutorial

This dazzling card has been made using a combinantion of effects, mainly, acetate or clear plastic, holographic paper, permanent ink and rubbing alcohol. The clear qualities of the acetate or plastic allow you to create stunning windows and designs in your card making crafts, specifically suited to the clear rubber stamps you love.

To Make this  Card you will Need:

  • Clear plastic or acetate
  • Holographic Paper
  • Doodle Wings Clear Stamps
  • Clear Stamping Blocks
  • Permanent Ink Pad and Cleaner
  • Permanent markers – varying colors
  • Rubbing Alcohol in a small spritz bottle
  • Cardstock
  • Q-Tips
  • Craft knife and cutting mat
  • Celebrate Card Making Template

To Make this  Card:

1. Ink the butterfly design found in the Doodle Wings Clear Stamp Set with versamark, permanent ink. Quickly and carefully stamp the design onto the acetate or clear plastic. Promptly clean your stamp with the stamp cleaner, then with water until it is clean. NOTE: Permanent ink will discolor clear stamps, but with quick and prompt cleaning this is minimized as much as possible. Any remaining discoloration will not hinder the performance of the stamp.

2. Turn the stamped design over and color in the butter fly wings with a rainbow design. Don’t make the color changes crisp as you are wanting the colors to bleed together a little

3. Spritz your design 4-6 times (still on the back) with rubbing alcohol. Be sure you are on a level surface and that the rubbing alcohol cannot reach the front of your design as it will cause the lines to bleed.  While it is wet, you may wish to rub a pin head through the ink to encourage blending.

4. Allow the design to dry, then you can clean up the edges with a clean Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. Carefully wipe away any color outside the stamped lines. You can wipe it away with the dry end of the Q-tip once you have moistened it.

5. Stamp the butterfly (without the antennae)  in a light colored ink on cream cardstock by inking the design and rubbing off any ink that is on the antennae.

6. Using a craft knife, cut around the outside of the design to create a butterfly shape.

7. (Picture 8)  Place holographip paper under the butterfly cut out.

8.  (Picture 7) Place colored butterfly over the opening and trace around the edge of the acetate so you can cut the cream colored cardstock to the same size as the acetate. This allows perfect placement.

9.  Secure the three layers together with brads or eyelet positioned in the corners. You can now see the holographic designs through the multicolored wings of the butterfly.

10. Complete the card by matting the butterfly design and adding the saying or sentiment that expresses the wish you have in mind.

Puppet Pocket Card Tutorial

A pocket card is a fun way to include a gift or surprise within the card itself. This card features three butterfly stick puppets made with clear rubber stamps and rubber stamping techniques.

To Make This Card:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Score the 6″ x 12″ cardstock at the 4″ mark and the 8″ mark. Fan fold the card.

Fold the front two panels together and with your craft knife cut the desired angle for the card pocket as illustrated below.

Pocket formed will look similar to the image below. DO NOT secure the pocket panels together yet at this stage.

Cut out a square frame from your contrasting paper to fit inside your card. Decorate the frame and pocket edges with the mini ric-rack clear border stamp found in the Ribbons and Rikrack Clear Stamp Set.  Using your clear border rubber stamp, create vertical lines on the pocket. Be sure to stagger the placement of the flower as you stamp. To prevent the border line from extending over the stamped rikrack place a post it note to mask areas where you don’t want the image to appear. Using the triangle you intitally cut away, stamp 3 of your favorite butterflies with Clear butterfly rubber stamps to make the stick puppets.

Use the square cut from the frame you made from the contrasting paper (in the previous step) to create a moveable element on the front of the card.  Add a matching border on the square using your border clear stamp. If you wish to add glitter to the circle designs in your background take a moment to add it to your pocket now. Secure the corner of the square element with a brad through the front panel of the pocket. We used a tiny piece of the triangle scraps to offsett this element. Stamp a flower using your Clear flower rubber stamps.  Color in the leaf and the butterflies as desired using watered down ink from the lid of your stamp pad. (You can learn more about this coloring technique from idea number 5 in the Coloring Rubber Stamped Designs article.)

Cut out the butterflies and the flower close to the edge of each design. Adhere the flower to the center of the square using 3D foam tape. Stamp your sentiment above and below the flower using a birthday saying clear stamp.

Using a clear liquid glue cover the petals of your flower and then sprinkle with the mini micro beads. Please note that your glue needs to be fairly thick to hold them on. Liquid glue will cause pigment ink to bleed a little so take care not to cover the design itself if you can.

Next, using the Mini Bee’s clear stamp set fill in the frame inside the card with flowers and leaves. This will leave your butterfly puppets flying over a lovely flower garden.

Secure the edges of you pocket with double sided tape. Adhere the butterfly puppets to kebab skewers and place inside the pocket. You may need to adjust the length of the stick to complement your card.

That completes your puppet pocket card. These cards are great for kids and can be made up in any theme to suit the child’s likes or personality. A puppet pocket card can even be created to tell a story such as  Old MacDonald’s Farm or The Little Engine that Could.

Happy Stamping.
